‘Feet Hit The Ground’ by Kier review

Kier is a Yorkshire based Country artist who is making waves with her captivating and genre-blending style. Since launching her solo career late 2022, Kier has demonstrated time and time again her fearless approach to songwriting and performances that leave her audiences spell bound.

Later this year Kier, along with Georgia Nevada and Rhiannon Page will be embarking on ‘The Worst Kept Secret’ tour.

“To me it’s a bit of a reintroduction of myself as an artist. It’s the most emotionally vulnerable I’d say I’ve allowed myself to be thus far.”

Kier continues by explaining what was meant by the song and what its intentions were.

“The song tries to encapsulate grief and loss of love and how we coast through this until eventually we hit our new reality.”

An intriguing yet fully relatable experience for us all at some point in our lives. With its delicate vocal and casual feel the song encapsulates the sense of loss and reflection that inevitably comes with grief and loss.

“Oh, the tide rolls in like an apology

The rhythm feels familiar, but I know it’s just the sea

I call your name cause it’s been so long

And I just like to feel it rolling off my tongue

Oh, and I can’t seem to help it

Is that really so wrong”

The first verse starts by drawing comparisons with the sea and feelings of grief. It’s an interesting analogy in so much as it’ll always be there, and we will find ourselves dealing with it in waves, some good times, other times deep in reflecting on the memories. Reference to “call your name” speaks to keeping their memory alive and keeping them with us.

“Oh, and there’s something ‘bout the moon

That keeps pulling me under

And it’s making me wonder

Will it bring me back to you?”

These lyrics speak to a greater force, and how some people turn to spirituality to help manage and cope with grief. Questioning whether “it bring me back to you” is a common thought, and in some ways the moon does bring us back to them, recalling memories and times perhaps sharing in the same moonlight. It is now this moonlight that is helping guiding us through grief and live without them.

“Back to the times when the nights don’t end

When it’s simply you in the pits of my head

I’m replaying everything that I should have said

Typing out feelings that I’ll never send

Cause what do you do when the noise gets loud

When running in place starts wearing you down

I’m going insane tryna figure it out

Like you can hear me when I’m thinking out loud

Oh, I will fall with the rain

Till my feet hit the ground”

The chorus speaks of nostalgia, recalling possibly good times, but equally long nights where we can’t sleep as we’re still coping with grief. It portrays how we often get in our own head and “the noise gets loud”. Whilst “like you can hear me when I’m thinking out loud” may sound a bit crazy, it’s not uncommon to still keep that connection going. It’s a testament to keeping their memory and legacy alive, and only proves the significance that they held in our lives. Personifying rainfall as ourselves is an interesting image but shows our relationship with the outer world. It also shows how we can be high one moment and then our lives come crashing down then next. Saying that, there is purpose in falling down, something that’s not always apparent at the time. It not only allows ourselves to rest and take stock of our life from a new perspective, it can also unlock new friendships and new beginnings for ourselves too.

“I hear your voice saying goodbye

And I’m angry at the way we let something so beautiful die

And I can feel your pain, and I know you can mine

But if something’s meant to stay, won’t it roll back with the tide?

Oh, when I can hardly breathe, I’m clinging onto my life.”

This is perhaps the difficult stage where we feel that the connection we have with them is slipping away and our conscience realises it. The lyrics also detail the exchange of pain; as much as we often share love with close friends and family, we also share in their pain. The lyric also returns to the imagery and concept of comparing to the sea with grief “but if something’s meant to stay, won’t it roll back with the tide?” Similarly the last line of the lyric suggests a struggle with their own life when extending the comparison with the sea and grief.

“Oh, tell me when you get there

How the other half live

How’d you find a way in?

Did you pay for your sins?

I’ll just sink while you swim

And sit here and think.”

These lyrics consider life on the other side, conversing with those who have met their maker. In some ways it is rhetorical as we can’t get the true answers, however some can contact them through spirituality. It also speaks of paying for our sins, in a sort of redemptive way and it being a condition of entry to the afterlife or heaven. Reference to “I’ll just sink while you swim” is perhaps considering drowning in grief while those we’ve lost are enjoying the swim in peaceful and tranquil waters of heaven.

The chorus feels particularly intimate and personal given reference to being “in the pits of my head”. It also taps into the feeling and emotions we encounter during grief, and the desire to replay what you’d said. The lyric also references some therapeutic strategies such as journaling or writing down “typing out feelings that I’ll never send”; this helps better understand how we’re feeling and how we can address it. Again comparison is made between humans and the rain, emphasised no doubt for added al effect but also the added dimension of what the tears represent.
