‘Kiss You (When I’m Drunk)’ by Kelly-Anne review
Kelly-Anne is a UK Country singer-songwriter based in Swindon. Describing her style as ‘rowdy Country’ and also know as the ‘Y’alternative Country singer’ which is understandable as she draws inspiration from legends such as Johnny Cash and Gretchen Wilson.
‘Kiss you (When I’m Drunk)’ was Kelly-Anne’s debut release, and is currently available to download and stream following its official release date of 14th August 2026.
“As my first release, I really hope this sets the tone for what is to come from me as an artist. Speaking out, being fierce, rowdy and making noise in the Country Music World.”
In an Instagram post on 14th August (release day) Kelly-Anne explains that the background to the artwork was captured at Bobby’s Idle Hour, the first place in Nashville that she played her original music. The post elaborates further detailing how the song was written in 10 minutes flat one afternoon whilst trying to decide on a song to record. It’s about kissing boys in nightclubs.
“High heels, short skirts to kill and I'm heading out to the bar.
I'm hanging with my friends coz I don't intend to find out who you are.
After one too many drinks it's easy for me to slide in amongst your friends, then I play game coz I don't know your name and suddenly I have no shame.
Then a song comes on and I lose control and I'm all over the place.”
The first verse sets up vivid details of a night out on the town, describing attire and the company we’re keeping. It goes on to describe these friends as somewhat of a protective shield in so much as being with them will have safety in numbers and expresses no intention to meet others and “find out who you are”.
The lyrics then also details how after a few too many drinks then this may all be forgotten and you’re embedded in someone else’s friends. The verse culminates in the ultimate reference to a good night out, “a song comes on and I lose control and I’m all over the place.” This is a testament as to how much music is rooted into us, cultivating a playlist that charts our life and certain milestones.

The chorus then poses the question”have you ever really noticed that I only ever kiss you when I’m drunk?” Something which demonstrates how polar opposite our character can be whilst intoxicated. The song continues to reference to reference this point, not only as it’s the title of the song, but also portrays the cycle we go on, despite often saying ‘I’m never drinking again’. There is also acknowledgement that we realise we’re reaching our limit, or indeed have out stretched ourselves with reference to “these whiskey cocktails got me slipping off the rails and this is gonna bite me in the …” Whether it be the drink, or the regret, it will be felt later, usually the morning after the night before.
“Hey boy I don't need no man and you're looking a little too close. I don't want your number, we don't need to talk, you just need to take off your....... shoes!
It's getting a little late and I don't want to wait for you to have to stay the night. You've had too much to say, I got a cab on the way and I really wanna say goodnight.
We've had a little fun, you might not be the one and it really comes down to this.”
The second verse details the push back, saying “I don’t want your number, we don’t need to talk” showing clear intentions of not being interested. The following lyric “you just need to take off your…. Shoes!” portrays the hesitancy though as was it intended to be shoes? Perhaps this is the realisation of the allure and that actually whilst out having a good time, you’ve then realised that you’ve lost your shoes, perhaps due to discomfort from dancing all night, or through their impracticality.
The second verse continues to document and the impatience of not wanting to wait to say goodnight. There’s the acknowledgment that “We’ve had a little fun, you might not be the one” a sign that we realise we’re reaching may not find our soulmate if we’re inebriated, and often it’s about being present in the moment and embracing every moment, rather than drinking to forget it.
The song returns to the chorus before moving to the bridge stating:
“I don't need no fancy dinner, I just need a two-step fling. When I'm stone cold sober this will all be over and I'm on to the next damn thing.”
The bridge shows an honest statement of need and desire but without commitment. This epitomises a one night stand where fun is the only thing on the mind, not anything further.
The song then plays out with the chorus once again to close.
