Having previously released songs such as ‘In My Mind’ and ‘Rock This Town’, Crossfire Heart are releasing their latest song ‘Torn and Blue’ on 8th May 2026.

Louise tells me that Gareth came up with the initial ideas for the song however it’s been a joint effort in terms of lyric writing. Gareth explains:

“I’ve always liked the word blue. It expresses an emotional state in a very old fashioned way. The real crux of this song though is the line “it’s 4:30 in the morning” I often wake up at 4:30, don’t know why, it’s 4:30 now.”

The song ponders what we’d all be thinking about in the small hours. Lost loves? Regrets? Trapped relationships? Gareth wasn’t thinking of any of these consciously but like any concept, there’s a song in it somewhere! It’s interesting when you think of relating colours with emotions. This can be seen where stereotypically red is associated with love and lust, yellow with sunshine and happiness, and blue is either cold or sad depending on its context. Some artists have even chosen to define each chapter/ era of their music into colour, such as Megan Moroney with blue being part of her ‘Am I Ok?’ era, and pink as her ‘Cloud 9’ era. Similarly, UK artist Amy Jo is categorising her latest works under the colour theme of purple/ lilac.

“Rain is soaking through these boots

Like you infiltrate my heart

Times I’ve played it fast and loose

But I won’t let us part.”

“Lovers, they may come and go

Like the midnight train

Thinking I can live without you

Lying to myself again”

The first verse starts by painting the picture of soaked boots, drawing comparison between a lover and the rain. An interesting comparison, yet one I can understand; sometimes love can be a deluge and other times it can come from the lightest of showers. There is self reflection referenced here, acknowledging that they’ve ’played it fast and loose’ and not been as considerate of others feelings.

Comparing lovers to trains is an interesting idea, given that often relationships ‘hit the rails’ at some point. There is a realisation that you’re besotted and have totally fallen in love when you think you can live without them, but equally able to realise that you’re lying to yourself and the truth is anything but.

It’s intriguing how both Louise and Gareth split the verses, almost speaking to both sides of a relationship and how these feelings are universal, we all encounter similar thoughts and feelings at some point, making the song even more relatable.

‘“Cause it’s 4:30 in the morning

All I think about is you

With no way of reaching out

There’s nothing I can do

Said I could give you up, girl

Set my soul free

But one taste of you, I’m torn and blue

And my world is on its knees.”

The chorus speaks to the early hour moments where we perhaps find ourselves awake and reflecting on our life and being drawn back to the love of our life, be that how we met, how lucky we are to be with them, what the future looks like together, and how you want your future with them to look. ‘With no way of reaching out, there’s nothing I can do’ suggests that it’s still early days of being lovers and not cohabiting together otherwise you’d turn over and gaze at them. ‘Set my soul free, but one taste of you, I’m torn and blue, and my world is on its knees’ suggests that you’re considering breaking things off, but keep getting lured back and become conflicted and in doing so making yourself blue (down), and this can feel that your world is at the mercy of love.

“My mind’s filled with a picture

Drives me crazy cause you ain’t near

Knowing I’m in love with you

All the while she’s living here.”

“I try to put you behind me

But I just can’t play that game

All I wanna do is hold you

And know that you’re feeling the same”

Verse two details how confused or perhaps how clear your minds image is at in the small hours as ‘my mind’s filled with a picture of, drives me crazy cause you ain’t near’. This speaks to the subconscious whereby perhaps the lover isn’t considered significant enough in our lives. It too could also speak of wanting some respite from being insatiably in love. ‘Knowing I’m in love with you, all the while she’s living here’; if the lover is now residing together then this not only shows how the relationship has progressed but perhaps means they feel that seeing them constantly is overwhelming and that’s why they don’t appear in their minds picture. The minds picture is in a way fantasising about what we want, but how can we fantasise on someone when we have them in our lives, in our bed already?

Reference of putting you behind me suggests moving on, however later then references ‘all I wanna do is hold you and know that you’re feeling the same.’ This leans into the torn aspect of the song and the state of our inner mind.

“And I don’t know if you’re listening

I doubt you ever do

But I hope you know this shattered heart

Keeps on beating just for you.”

The bridge touches on feelings often found in relationships, communication and listening, or there lack of. There’s a real sense of continued love through the lyric ‘But so hope you know this shattered heart, keeps beating just for you.’ Almost suggesting that whilst their heart is broken and shattered, they live for moments with their lover, they breathe life into us.

‘Torn and Blue’ is out 8th May 2026 and available to download and stream on the usual music platforms. Make sure to follow Crossfire Heart on social media for news of their upcoming gigs and future new music.
